Adolescent Discovered Deceased Following False Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A 14-year-old boy was discovered deceased only a few days following being falsely accused of taking the cremated remains of a deceased infant during a burglary, an inquest has heard.
Heartbreaking Discovery
The young boy's mother and father found his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.
False Accusations Start
The investigation heard how his parent received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if her son was her child. The message stated: "Inform him thanks for burgling my flat."
In a statement presented to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the news, claiming her baby's remains had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Police Inquiry
An investigation report from authorities later determined the alleged burglary victim had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said property was not stolen in the first place".
Media reports about the alleged stolen remains generated online comments, and although Kai was not named in the messages, his parent said individuals "knew it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she said.
Emotional Health Impact
She explained that Kai had been diagnosed with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' opinions genuinely were important to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she commented, "especially when this was not true".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later released pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the hearing heard, but had failed to reached out to the family by the time of his passing.
Withdrawal and Anxiety
His mother said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could seem like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the supposed incident, she said her child informed her he had gone into the house because the resident who resided there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he wanted, but refuted removing anything.
Digital Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being bullied online after the accusations.
The inquest learned that one young adult urged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no worries on the evening before he died, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".
She described him as a "compassionate, affectionate" boy, and said her "family is completely shattered".
He had been "obviously hiding his worries", she stated, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
Educational Response
The hearing heard from educational staff at the local secondary school.
On 8 November, she "overheard some boys discussing that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the conversation, the educator said she rang the family's parents' landline and left a message saying she had communicated to Kai about the accusations.
The court heard his parents said they never receive that message.
Official Conclusion
Senior investigator informed the hearing he would wait for reports regarding what enhancements had been made to handling individuals with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of future fatalities report.
Providing a narrative finding, he said: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young individual.
"Likely untruths were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the medium of online networks.
"On 11 November, he was questioned by the police and after his questioning he was released whilst inquiries continued."
The official concluded: "Exists no proof that the acts or failures of any organization caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the result of a self-inflicted act it is not possible to determine his intent."
