China's Ice Dancers Under Probe After Displaying Prop Weapon at Competition
The International Skating Union have launched an investigation after a pair of Chinese figure skaters were seen holding what looked like a toy ballistic missile during a grand prix figure skating event.
Broadcast footage showed the skaters waiting with a large toy shaped like a rocket labeled “DF-61” while waiting for their scores at the “kiss and cry” area on Saturday.
This model is a recently introduced Chinese-made ground-launched long-range weapon capable of carrying nuclear weapons, which was displayed during a national ceremony recently.
Officials is aware of an unsuitable plush item seems to have been one of the objects tossed onto the ice by audience members after a routine during the competition,” the organization commented via a release.
“The soft toy was subsequently held by the skaters who had just performed. We regrets the incident and will investigate further.”
Ren and Xing finished eighth out of ten teams during the ice dancing competition, with the victory going to the American pair from the US.
