Congress Approves Legislation to Disclose Jeffrey Epstein Files

The Senate on Tuesday gave swift approval to legislation that will mandate the disclosure of case documents related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House gave in after an extended period of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.

Unanimous Approval in Congress

Senators proceeded by consensus, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a recorded vote, accelerating the process. Just before, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a massive majority.

Citizens have been patient long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer said in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”

Next Steps

The measure next goes to the president for his approval. He stated on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.

Though Trump has for months dismissed the outcry over the government’s handling of the Epstein case as a “Democrat hoax”, he voiced approval for the legislation over the past few days, and said he would give his assent if it is presented to him.

Support and Opposition

The Democratic party, along with those affected and their representatives who were watching from a public section, cheered after the bill was approved. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he feared the measure would disclose specific data of individuals involved, potential suspects and others involved in the investigation.
