{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences near miss with F1 track officials
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals ran across the track directly in front of him
The dangerous situation took place on the third rotation when safety workers were seen on the track as Lawson was getting back on the race following an quick visit to the pits to swap his compromised front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Moments later, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two guys dashing across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a active circuit safety personnel can be authorized to just dash across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"
Governing Body Reviewing
Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is actively examining the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the turning point of that curve" commented the governing body
"In the third rotation, safety personnel were notified and put on alert to enter the track and remove the wreckage once all cars had passed"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy personnel were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was raised in that area"
"We are still investigating what occurred after that point"
