The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Adventure with a Touch of Family-Friendly Tween Love Story

Throughout this animated journey aimed at tweens, the world of fairies focuses on collecting teeth from sleeping children and leaving gold beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He’s only slightly more curious about the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who provide metal in exchange. However, Van’s interest grows when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the hideous gnome he had imagined.

A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a gentle touch of teen romance (though it’s very much suitable for younger kids). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. The two species portrayed in the film are incredibly similar, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. The fairies are said to be self-centered types, given to taking whatever they fancy, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, smelly, and primitive, but are in fact intelligent and technologically advanced.

Naturally, this scenario needs a common enemy to join forces against, and that need is met by some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for quite savage, though not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

There aren’t all that many animated films aimed at the kind of audience that is starting to experience early romances, but aren’t yet old enough for the content 14-year-olds are watching in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster falls into this age group, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but you could do worse.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
